MAKEABLE CITY REVISED
Meso
Groot IJsselmonde, Rotterdam
NL
Two types of garden cities have been constructed in Rotterdam. The eccentric model by Lotte Stam-Beese and the concentric model, such as Groot IJsselmonde by Van Drimmelen, among others.

Hordijkerveld Noord is the head of “flower leaf” Hordijkerveld. The plan area therefore borders on the center of Groot-IJsselmonde. It is an area where the urban ideal and the existing landscape are poorly united. The housing typology plus the cultural-historical Kerkedijk are unfortunately crammed together, whereby the garden city principles are not or only moderately integrated. The plan area is petrified with oversized roads and sidewalks, as well as an overcapacity of parking. In addition, the western part of the plan area has the well-known garden city problem of backsides that adjoin streets, and flooding is experienced in the backyards of the dike houses. The replacement of the sewerage system thus offers the opportunity to redesign the outdoor space according to district-specific garden city ideals and to solve the flooding.

This consists of applying the monumental green principle at the end of every street. Strengthening the fine-grained accessibility for slow traffic. The application of backstage effect with greenery and alternation of different tree sizes with hedges and underplanting below eye level. Finally, a clear hierarchy is introduced in the larger whole between the dike, the articulation strip, the main road and the residential streets. The dike is accompanied by resonating wadi sections, in which the clusters of trees from 1960 are preserved. For example, the period of the former polder landscape coincides with that of the risen garden city.
